As promised in my new year’s resolutions, I am going to spend each month focusing on a specific grape. The grape varietal for January is Merlot.
Merlot is one of the most common red grapes in the world. The grape originates from the Bordeaux wine region in France, but it is also grown throughout the world’s wine regions and is very prevalent in Italy, California, and Chile.
Merlot is a relatively thin-skinned grape, resulting in lower tannin levels. As such, merlot is often used as a blending varietal to soften the tannin of more robust varieties.
Some common flavors/aromas: Plum, Chocolate, Cherry, Blackberry, Strawberry, Current, Vanilla, Clove, Tobacco, Cedar.
